Corrosion Protection.

Prevention of corrosion or protecting the underground pipelines from corrosion is one of the vital activity in the construction of Oil pipelines. In the case of Oil pipelines the cost of rectification, replacement or even the loss of revenue on interruption is very high.

For buried structures the first line of defense against corrosion is the use of protective coatings. They work in the principle of completely isolating the metal from the corrodent thus reducing the rate of reaction between the metal and the corrodent. Esses Engineers are engaged in the application of this protective coating mainly painting and coaltar enamel coating. The coated pipelines will require considerably less Cathodic protection current than bare pipe line. This protective coating, also make Cathodic protection economical and feasible.

Shot Blasting.

Surface cleaning of pipes are achieved by Grit / Shot Blasting using Grit or Shots of very hard steel. The size of shots varies from half to one and a half millimeter. The blasting equipment is a closed chamber unit with inbuilt arrangement for collection and recycling of shots. It has a set of screw conveyor and bucket elevator, which handles the shots and dumps it back in the shots tank. The shots tank is located on an elevated structure and this allows gravity feeding of the shots to the blasting unit. Dust and rust generated are conveyed through a pneumatic conveyor. This ensures a pollution free atmosphere. The dust collector separates them and can be disposed once in a few days. Handling of the pipes is done by means of a skew conveyor where the pipe is moved in a screw type motion. The cleaning quality can be controlled and quality standards if Swedish or IS can be achieved with consistency.

It is virtually difficult to obtain a perfect coating. More over the coating gets damaged during handling, transportation, and erection activities. The coating can deteriorate due to aging and bacterial growth under ground. Coating is very effective for aboveground and for underground pipelines protection can be achieved with Protective coating along with Cathodic protection.
